Around one hundred and twenty disabled men and women from all over Tamil Nadu, including orthopaedically disabled, visually / speech / hearing impaired and mentally ill persons participated in the exhibition, exhibiting and selling their products such as toys , paintings , food items and other consumer articles
Around two hundred persons visited the exhibition , encouraged the disabled persons and purchased the products made by disabled persons.

Nandini Voice For the Deprived putforth substantial efforts in organizing the exhibition. Around two lakh persons were reached to convey the information about the event and inviting them to the exhibition.
Bharat Sanchar Nigham (BSNL) supported, by flashing the message about the exhibition by way of SMS message on the previous day. Several local newspapers published about the event before hand. Paid advertisements were released in The Hindu. More than one thousand post cards were sent to cross-section of members of the society inviting them for the event. Around 300 personal letters were sent to Chief Executives and senior executives of several corporate organizations, government departments, serving and retired bureaucrats inviting them for the event. Around 2000 e-mail messages were sent including to those belonging to NGOs, those who have publicly expressed concern about the problems of the disabled and others. Posters were put in a few locations around the venue. Messages were put in the employees’ bulletin board in a few leading software companies.

Invitations were sent to every media, newspaper and journal published from Chennai or circulated in Chennai including The Hindu, The New Indian Express, Doordarshan, NDTV, Sun TV , Economic Times, Financial Express, Business Line.
Only representative of Dinamani and The Hindu turned up. Only Dinamani alone published a report in a suitable manner.

It appears that the disabled persons were satisfied and happy, as they were treated with love and respect, were provided all facilities including food, travel expenses for those coming from outside Chennai and all of them sold some products.

The organizers felt very sad that not more than two hundred kind-hearted persons visited the exhibition in spite of such massive efforts. Even those who live near the venue and were personally invited did not turn up.
The efforts of the organizers to sensitise the public about the capability of the disabled persons were not successful in the views of the organizers, as the citizens of Chennai have not responded adequately to the call to encourage and support the disabled persons.

A number of persons were asked by Nandini Voice For the Deprived as to why the public response was poor.

The following suggestions were made.

  1. The exhibition should have been conducted in a star hotel or a club of elites
  2. The exhibition should have been conducted at least for three days instead of one day.
  3. Some Ministers or senior bureaucrats should have been called to inaugurate
    the programme.
  4. Some film stars or leading sports personalities should have been invited to inaugurate the programme.
  5. The press should have been handled better by adequate public relationship exercise.
  6. The cooperation of some corporates should have been solicited , so that they could have sponsored the programme, advertised the event and given publicity, to their “concern for the disabled”
  7. In view of the chaotic and stressful nature of traffic in Chennai city, most citizens, particularly in the middle and the upper income group , would not like to stir out of their residence unless it would become absolutely necessary.
  8. Even if celebrities were to be called to inaugurate the programme, it would not have made much difference to the number of visitors. Perhaps, press would have covered more.
  9. What the organizers wanted was to qualitatively sensitise the public and it is necessary that it should be done without introducing an artificial glamour.
The organizers were not keen to invite the celebrities to inaugurate the programme, which would have been only a cosmetic event. In several instances in the past, the celebrities were known to have attended the programme late making the disabled persons wait, give lofty advice and text book quotations and leave immediately after the inaugural function. Nothing more happens than this.

Maximum efforts were put forth to invite the press by sending repeated invitations but the press did not respond.

Most of the invited persons did not turn up and many that would have seen the advertisements and received SMS message did not respond.

Possibly, out of the two lakh persons who could have received the message, only two hundred persons could find time. Perhaps, others were too busy on that day or the cause of the disabled is not a matter of priority for them.
