The news regarding the record sales of liquor by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) in the present year makes sad reading. It has been reported that the sale was 1.32 crore cases of Indian made foreign spirits and 82.6 lakh cases of beer in the just seven months of the current financial year, compared to 19.3 crores of cases of IMFS and 90.2 lakh cases of beer for the whole of 2004-2005.

Certainly, this is a tainted income earned by the Government of Tamil Nadu at the cost of health and peace in thousands of poor families in the state.

As the liquor consumption has now the sanction of law and government itself is in the forefront in the sale of liquor, the liquor consumption in Tamil Nadu is rapidly growing by leaps and bounds. It causes considerable alarm that persons in the lower income group and the youth and the students in the formative age group are taking to liquor habit in a big way in recent times.

Such spread of liquor habit, largely due to "helpful policies of the Tamil Nadu government" is leading to number of adverse effects in the society like permissive life style, corruption , disturbance of peace in the families ,loss of value system amongst the youth etc., apart from affecting the health of the liquor addicts.

Nandini Voice For The Deprived recently carried out an extensive investigative study on the impact of liquor habit of men, particularly in the lower income group in Tamil Nadu. The study has described with facts, figures and case studies as to how the life of the women folk in the poor families have been severely disturbed . Three episodes were telecast in Podigai channel of Doordarshan in "Magalir Panchayat Programme" , when Nandini Voice For The Deprived participated based on the findings of the study and more than 25 women from lower income group from all over Tamil Nadu narrated their sufferings due to the drinking habit of the men folk in the families .

The Tamil Nadu government cannot remain unconcerned about the impact of such fast spreading liquor habit. The steep increase in income for the Tamil Nadu government due to liquor sale is a blot on the commitment of the Tamil Nadu government to the welfare of the citizens.

Knowing the serious adverse consequences of the present liquor policy of government of Tamil Nadu, the responsible and thinking citizens of Tamil Nadu should appeal to the Government of Tamil Nadu to reappraise its liquor policy and reintroduce prohibition in the state immediately.

Nandini Voice For The Deprived has now organized a signature campaign requesting the Government of Tamil Nadu to reappraise its liquor policy. It is proposed to collect signature of one lakh citizens from all parts of Tamil Nadu and submit it to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.

Those who share the concern about the adverse consequences of the fast spreading liquor habit in Tamil Nadu are requested to send the mail, expressing their concern in the matter.
